Who are Keswick Adventures?

Keswick Adventures are an outdoor adventure company in the Lake District. They run outdoor activities such as ghyll scrambling, paddle boarding and kayaking around Keswick and other areas of the national park.

SEO Goals

Lee and Becca approached me in early 2020 because they knew that there were opportunities to improve their existing business. They were already doing reasonably well in an industry that has a lot of competition, and they had gathered plenty of positive feedback from clients.

However, they also recognised that they needed to continue building on their existing work in order to beat the competition. Their major goals included increasing brand recognition, improving user experience on their website, and promoting their activities more widely, therefore bringing more customers through the door.

The initial contract was to provide some basic SEO improvements and keyword research. The first month was so successful that we are still working together over three years later (and counting)!

Starting Point

Traffic to the website was minimal when tracking was first put in place. It started growing rapidly once SEO best practices were implemented.

In May 2020, when work began, the Keswick Adventures website was seeing approximately 10 daily visits. Though the company had a website, it wasn’t well formatted and did not follow many SEO best practices.

SEO Improvements

Initial Search Engine Optimisation focused on identifying some target keywords, implementing them into the site content, improving content more generally, and restructuring the site so that it was more natural for a user to navigate and easier for searchers to find what they wanted. Analytics was also implemented so that we could identify progress and monitor user behaviour going forward.

A regular and successful blog was started early on, which covered company news and topics directly relating to Keswick Adventures (such as The Best Family-Friendly Outdoor Activities in the Lake District and 9 Exciting Outdoor Activities near Keswick). As the popularity of the outdoor adventure company grew, the range of topics also expanded, covering related topics that would be of interest to service users: examples include The Best Pubs in Keswick and 10 Amazing Restaurants in Keswick.

Over the following three years, the site was regularly checked for possible improvements, best practices were executed, and results were tracked. An online booking system was implemented to more easily allow users to book and to help the team more successfully monitor income and bookings.

Off-site, too, improvements were made. A Google Business Profile was set up, optimised, and regularly updated; listings were added to reputable websites to build a backlink profile; and press coverage was obtained. All this work helped to drive an impressive amount of traffic to the website and to increase bookings.

Considering the success of the SEO, we also began seasonal and ongoing paid advertising via Google Ads, which regularly sees a return on ad spend (ROAS) of nearly 3,000%.

When I began working with Keswick Adventures in May 2020, they were receiving approximately 10 visits a day. In May 2023, that had increased to 250-300 daily visits – a 3,000% increase. They are currently receiving approximately 150 bookings and in excess of £20,000 per month from online bookings.

Keswick Adventures continues to hold the top position on Google for many high-volume keywords relevant to their target audience. They also receive a high number of branded searches – a testament to their continually growing reputation.

Beyond these impressive figures, the successful SEO work has allowed Keswick Adventures to grow as a business. They have expanded into corporate team building, have set up additional sister companies, and  are about to move to a larger venue. They have also branched out into TV & Film – their sister company, UNIT 7 Safety, has worked behind the scenes on projects such as The Witcher and Oscar-winning movie 1917. All this has been made possible in great part by a successful SEO campaign.
